COVID-19 is an infectious virus caused by the recently discovered coronavirus. Here are some guidelines for how to protect yourself and your loved ones.

How to Protect Yourself

Because there’s currently no cure or vaccine for COVID-19, the best way to protect yourself is to avoid exposure to the virus. COVID-19 can spread between people within 6 feet of each other through respiratory droplets, such as coughing or sneezing.

Remember to wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially if you’ve been in a public place or after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. If soap and water aren’t easily available, make sure you use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. You should also avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact with those who are sick and try your best to put physical distance between yourself and others, especially if COVID-19 is spreading within your community. This can be imperative especially if you’re at a higher risk for severe illness

Symptoms & What to Do If You’re Sick

Symptoms for COVID-19 have been reported to appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus and include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Remember, if you are sick, stay home unless it’s to get medical care.

If you think you’ve been exposed to COVID-19 and develop some of the symptoms listed above, call your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Keep Your Spaces Clean

Make sure you clean and disinfect the surfaces in your space that are most frequently touched with an EPA-registered household disinfectant. Some of these places can include:

  • Tables
  • Doorknobs
  • Light Switches
  • Countertops
  • Handles
  • Desks
  • Phones
  • Keyboards
  • Toilets
  • Faucets
  • Sinks

Make sure that you clean surfaces with soap and water prior to disinfecting them! Remember to take these precautions seriously to help yourself and your loved ones to stay healthy, and keep up to date with the latest news as this situation continues to unfold.
